M8.4: Chemical Policy Reform

The background subject I looked at from the Louisville Charter For Safer Chemicals  was #4, Act on Early Warnings. This is a very important element of chemical policy reform and should be required among protective agencies to monitor and prevent further harm based on a warning sign. Clearly we have failed to look act early warning signs of the past and present as we are all constantly exposed to chemicals that cause harm. That is why this type of reform can be stricter on chemical emissions and act with foresight. Protective action policy system that is discussed in the paper recognizes that: (1)Biologically active chemicals are harmful, (2) Acting when science is uncertain, and (3) Defining the “Credible Evidence of Harm” threshold for protective action. These perfectly sum up how we need to address chemical reform and not wait until significant harm has already been done. Taking precautionary action strengthens health and environmental programs to detect and predict possible harm, which can provide us with necessary tools and knowledge to decrease the amount of chemicals we are exposed to.

  1. Hi Marisa,
I agree with your statement that we need to address chemical issues before they cause significant harm to the environment. To take it a step further, I think working on the root of the problem would help reduce the warnings. Creating alternative mixtures that are less harmful to the environment would be beneficial in reducing exposure and danger warnings. Thanks for your thoughts!

  2. Hi Marisa,
I read through the Louisville Charter For Safer Chemicals was #4, Act on Early Warnings, and I agree with you that this should be required as part of policy reform. There have been several early warning signs that come from these chemicals and acting before they really hurt people is a good decision and should be implemented all over.
    Great post!
