M7.8: Blog about your topic of interest
My topic of interest is childhood asthma and
environmental triggers of air pollution. Locally, in 2001 the City and County
of San Francisco created the Asthma Task Force to address the epidemic of
asthma through primary prevention strategies with an emphasis on reducing
asthma disparities disproportionately affecting lower income communities in San
Francisco. The California Department implemented the Asthma Management Academy
(AsMA) which teaches community and health workers how to provide national
guidelines-based care and education to Californians living with asthma. Federal
agencies that provide research and support for asthma prevention and protection
include the CDC’s Asthma and Community Health Branch and the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) National Asthma Control Initiative. The EPA also has
a few campaigns like the “No Asthma Attacks” which focus on providing asthma
action plans and air quality information for children as well as how to manage
asthma triggers.

Hi Marisa,
ReplyDeleteIt is great to see that there are agencies on different government levels addressing this environmental health issue. One additional agency I would add into your list if the California Air Resources Board as they control air pollution released from cars. It also appears there's a lot of educational resources agencies to help people learn about prevention and treatment.
Hi Marissa,
ReplyDeleteTank you for your post! I really like that you are doing your topic on asthma and environmental triggers. Being from the Central Valley I am very aware of the various air pollutants that people are exposed to. I think that it is great that the city of San Francisco there is an Asthma Management Academy to help educate everyone on asthma.
Thank you for your post!
