M5.5: Campaign for Tap Water

If I were to develop a nationwide campaign to get people to drink tap water instead of bottled water, my campaign slogan would be: Tap out of it!

It would be a play on words from the phrase “snap out of it”. Meaning we need to snap out of it and stop using bottled water. The Story of Bottled Water video was very informative and more people need to see it to be more aware and educated about the harms of bottled water. The campaign would provide education and fundamental information regarding how harmful plastic water bottles are to our environment and how tap water is actually better regulated and a better option health wise and cost wise. In fact, bottled water is far less sustainable, more expensive, and most of the time tastes worse than tap water. I would want to spread awareness about how bottled water companies created a “manufactured demand” by scaring us into thinking tap water is harmful, and seducing us with fake images about where there actual water comes and misleading us about the quality of the water and how the bottles are recycled. The campaign would also emphasize the harms of plastic and how it is rarely recycled properly and very harmful to the environment, releasing very toxic pollution.

It’s amazing to see how many options there are of bottled water brands at grocery stores and liquor stores. I know that some of my family members often buy the large amounts of water bottles from Costco and rely on this as their main source of drinking water. I hope to better educate them and persuade them to end this habit and start drinking tap water. I can say that a lot of my family members and friends will be receiving reusable water bottles as Christmas presents this year along with an informative list of the harms of bottled water J I will help them Tap out of it in no time!

  1. Hi Marisa,

Great slogan! Using tap water has always grossed me out unless I know for sure it's been filtered, so I've definitely spent a good share of my money on bottled water. Perhaps water filters should be provided free-of-charge by local governments so that people will be encouraged to drink tap water instead.

  2. Hi Marisa,
I love your slogan! It is very clever. I think that your slogan and your campaign would work very well together. Needing to "Snap"/"Tap" people out of their use of bottled water by informing them of the lies the bottled water companies have spread.
    Great job!

  3. Hello Marisa,
That slogan is amazing! It really brings a wake up call to people about their choices, especially when it comes to the bottled water. Clever idea for providing your friends and family reusable water bottles. The only recommendation I have is to make sure they are BPA-free and safe overall - because even reusable water bottles may come with health risks.
