Being that our bodies are made up of nearly 70% water and
that the earth’s surface is made up of 71% water, it is important that the
water be as clean and protected as possible. The Clean Water Act of 1972 was
created to better control water pollution in the United States. When the act
was enacted it was the first that included interim goals to reduce additional
water pollution. The act ensured that it would restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of our
nation’s waters. Another important aspect of the act is that is divided water
pollution into 3 areas in order to properly regulate pollution. The 3 areas
include: point source pollution, non point source pollution and fill material.
This holds factory or sewage treatment facilities accountable for emitting
wastes, as well as construction sites responsible for agricultural run-off and
diffuses pollution. However, non-point sources like agricultural run-off are
still unregulated. The importance of this act is that it began to better
protect our water and decrease the amount of pollution emitted. There is still
much we need to do to protect our water from pollution and have better
regulations but this act set a much-needed standard that was non-existent
before 1972.

Hi Marisa,
ReplyDeleteI've repeatedly heard many of the water facts in the videos we watched, yet with each time I hear them, I'm always struck by the small amount of drinkable water we actually have. With all the new advancements in technology, I think it it's time for us to consider finding out ways in which to make undrinkable water drinkable by purifying it.

Hi Marisa,
ReplyDeleteThis act is important to the health of the public and future generations. However, it is just one step in the right direction. The EPA and other federal entities that ensure the conservation and sustainability of our environment need to understand that if we have no clean water, life in the United States would cease to exist. Thank you for your post!

Hello Marisa,
ReplyDeleteIt was rather interesting to learn that future legislature to better the Clean Water Act were negated, thus it is very important that the current law be enforced. In addition, other government entities need to bring about other policy to further protect the limited water resources we have.
