M4.6: Radon

Before this class I was unaware of what the gas radon was and how dangerous it can be. After talking with a few of my family members they were also unaware and this is concerning. Being that radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer and that it can be emitted from the uranium decaying beneath our homes, there needs to be more awareness about having homes tested. A national awareness campaign would be a great way to spread awareness and to have people buys tests for their homes. The campaign could begin with a commercial that explains the dangers and facts, much like the YouTube video we watched. It could be aired on all channels, and it could be an ad on multiple social media platforms and billboards. Potential collaborators could be the National institutes of Health, American Cancer Society, The Lung Cancer Alliance, and the Environmental Protection Agency.  In addition we could have state wide outreach to provide tests at lower prices and have a follow-up mailed reminders every couple of years once someone has submitted their first test. Hardware stores can also provide pamphlets next to the test they sell and these tests can be provided at more stores like Target or Costco. Being that this is a dangerous gas, it is important that we ensure the levels being emitted are safe for all communities.

  1. Like you, before this class, I had no idea that radon was an issue! I can't believe that I have gone 25 years with out hearing of the dangers the radon can expose someone to. We hear all the time on the news and different media sources about how lead is extremely dangerous and toxic, but I have not heard anything about radon.
I agree that places that sell house supplies should carry informational packets and signs promoting the danger of radon in homes.

  2. Hi Marisa,

Daisy also mentioned including hardware stores into the campaign as collaborators. That sounds like it would be great because customers would be able to get any questions answered by employees and perhaps demonstrations on how to use the test at home.

  3. Hello Marisa,

These are some really great ideas! You are able to reach many demographics - both young and old by using digital platforms and mail. I like the different approach you took on the collaborators and involving the cancer societies to take part in this campaign -- it really highlights the negative health effects that can result from too much radon exposure. The approach to disburse the test kits in Costco and Target are also great ideas as they are made more accessible to the general public. Awesome ideas!
